This book is definitely going on my list of favorites and would make a fantastic book for your next Book Club. The author does an excellent job of painting a fabulous picture of life in 1922 Russia, and his unique writing style is on point and a pleasure to read. Some of the scenes in the book are hilarious while others are quite heartwarming. He is a quirky, sarcastic, clever character you can't help but fall in love with him as he navigates life in the Metropol hotel. This sets the scene as Rostov makes the most of his new situation and carves out a life for himself. The protagonist, Count Alexander Rostov is a former Russian aristocrat sentenced to live out his life in the luxurious Metropol hotel rather than spend his life in prison or worse yet, death.Īccording to the author's website, this was quite common in Russia. The many nuances and details each character brought to the story helped to transport me to 1922 Russia and stay there for the 30 years the book spans. What pulled me into this story were the vividly drawn characters and their relationships with each other.
